There is a welcome development regarding the cable car which is planned for Mt Wellington (kunanyi). It has been long resisted by local residents.
The Tasmanian Planning Commission has recently announced the findings of a review it had carried out into the planning process. It found that there had been significant problems in the planning process around this development. It is now up to the Wellington Park Management Trust to decide whether to rezone the development boundary on the pinnacle in order to allow for a commercial ‘pinnacle centre’ to be located just above the organ pipes and a cable car on the face of Mt Wellington.
The following comes from Residents Opposing the Cable Car (ROCC).
The Wellington Park Management Trust (The Trust) has recommended that the area adjacent to the Organ Pipes on the top of Mt Wellington (the pinnacle area) be rezoned to allow for more commercial development. ROCC, Respect the Mountain, the Hobart City Council (the landowner) and other individuals, and gave evidence before the Planning Commission (20 and 26 April). The witnesses argued that the Trust had not followed due process and had largely ignored the evidence provided by submitters. The Mt Wellington Park Trust defended its position in favor of rezoning the pinnacle area.
On the 30th of June, the Tasmanian Planning Commission completed their review of the Trust. The Commission found that;
– In two separate instances, the Trust had failed to comply with the Wellington Park Act
– The Panel found that the Trust had not adequately summarised all the representations, and that these omissions resulted in no responses to some issues raised.
– The Commission’s report also found that of the seven issues that it reviewed, in six cases the Trust’s response had been ‘inadequate’.

It is now a decision for the Wellington Park Trust as to whether they proceed with the amendment in light of the Commissions findings. ROCC will remain steadfast in their opposition to rezoning the development boundary on the pinnacle in order to allow for a commercial ‘pinnacle centre’ to be located just above the beautiful organ pipes and a cable car on the face of Mt Wellington.
