After moving online in 2020 due to the Covid-19 lockdown, the Victorian Backcountry Festival will be back at Mt Hotham in 2021.
The Festival celebrates the growing movement of ‘all things backcountry’, focused on human powered winter activities such as cross-country skiing, snow shoeing, telemarking, alpine touring, split boarding, photography and snow camping. This will be the fourth year that the Festival has run, and the second time at Mt Hotham.
The Festival aims to not only provide an introduction to the ever-growing suite of backcountry activities, but to also make it more accessible to the general public, whilst educating them about mountain safety.
The 2021 Festival program will have a range of workshops and other events catered for non-skiers to beginners all the way to advanced skiers and boarders. We hope to make the program inclusive and family friendly.
It will be similar to previous festivals, with
- A strong outdoor program of tours and workshops
- A speaker’s program, featuring a great range of mountain themed presentations
- The outdoor, ski in bar on a mountaintop
- A demo village
This year we aim to have an organised above snowline camping option, and the traditional post-festival backcountry trip for intermediate to advanced skiers and riders.
The 2021 Backcountry Festival is scheduled for three days in September: 3, 4 and 5, 2021. Please try to get up on the Thursday so you can get the most out of the festival.
Stay tuned for details and keep an eye on the festival website.
