Saturday September 2, 2017.
This is the annual day for telemark skiers (and any other backcountry inclined skiers and riders) to get together, share some turns, make new friends and generally enjoy getting out in the mountains.
Anyone is welcome to organise an event.
At this point there are plans for gatherings at MT HOTHAM and the SNOWY MOUNTAINS.
There are plans for a camp at JB Plain (near Dinner Plain) for those who want to come to the HOTHAM event for the weekend.
We will met for a days skiing at 9am on saturday Sept 2. We generally meet in the Loch carpark. The location may be resort/ sidecountry or/ backcountry – this is generally determined via a poll of participants a week before the event (see below). If we have sufficient numbers and interest we will organise something for the sunday as well.
For those who are keen, we normally have dinner somewhere on the hill or at Dinner Plain on the saturday night.
If you’re planning to attend please show your interest on the facebook page – and please ‘vote’ in the poll. It has the question would you rather ski in resort or ski somewhere close outside resort (eg a trip to Mt Loch). The poll is available here.
This is a free event. You will need your own gear and be prepared for a full day out (food, water, and clothing appropriate for the day, especially if we decide to go outside the resort). If you’re based in Melbourne, you can hire telemark gear from The Wilderness Shop in Box Hill.
NSW World Telemark Day, Southern Hemisphere event: to be held at Perisher Slopes,
Saturday 9 September.
Meet at the Ski Tube Building at 8 am.
A fun day on the slopes at Perisher getting in some tele turns as a belated celebration of World Telemark Day Southern Hemisphere.
This is a free event – all welcome. For further information please contact Andrew: firstname.lastname@example.org
2016 world telemark day
We have set the day as saturday September 3.
As in previous years, there will be a gathering in the Mt Loch carpark from 9am, with a planned departure time of 9.30am.
We may ski in resort or go somewhere nearby (eg Dargo Bowl or Mt Loch/ Machinery Spur) and are asking people to fill out the poll on the facebook page if you’re planning to come so we can make a decision based on the majority preference before the day. If we ski in resort you will need to organise a lift pass.
This is a free event. You will need to bring your own gear (Ray’s ski hire in Myrtleford hires tele gear) and be ready for a day out in the elements.
Alpine Touring skiers and splitboarders most welcome!
Make a weekend of it: some people intend to camp at JB Plain for the weekend. Those who are keen can have dinner together (probably DP Hotel) on saturday night.
And, wherever you are, please share your pics via #WorldTelemarkDay
If you’re doing an event somewhere else, please let me know so I can promote: email@example.com
SEPTEMBER 5 (Southern Hemisphere)
Thanks to the people who made the effort to come along on the 5th! It was a great day. We’ll definitely help organise a VIC event in 2016. Stay tuned for details in autumn.
Telemark Skier magazine is starting WORLD TELEMARK DAY.
This inaugural event is a day for telemark skiers to get together and go telemark skiing. Wherever you might be around the world let’s gather at our local hills and drop a knee together!
The first Northern Hemisphere event was held on March 1st.
Facebook page for the event here.
Page on the Backcountry Forum here.
Mt Hotham area, Sept 5 & 6
Plans are shaping up for the first World Telemark Day gathering in the southern hemisphere.
The Victorian gathering is in the Hotham area. You will need a Hotham Resort pass to park in the Loch carpark. If people are staying at the JB Plain campsite (see below) people could organise car polling on the saturday morning to reduce costs.
SAT SEPT 5: The plan is to do a tour to Mt Loch/ Machinery Spur. Please meet in the Loch carpark at 9.15 for a 9.30 start. Please come with touring gear (ie skins if you need them), food and drink, appropriate clothing to be out in the mountains all day, etc. Once we get out to Loch, people can do runs on the east side of the mountain, or out on Machinery Spur. If the weather is not great we’ll probably head for Derrick hut for lunch. In really bad conditions we’ll make a group call on the day re alternative destinations.
For those who are keen, there will be a camp at JB Plain on friday and saturday nights (between Hotham and Dinner Plain). There is an old hut which might be available to gather in. It is a short walk/ ski into the plain where there is camping amongst snow gums. There is a pit toilet. Bring water. Camping is free as the site is within the Alpine National Park, and there is a ploughed area for carparking.
We’ll probably head to the Dinner Plain hotel for dinner on saturday night. Its a 2.5km ski to the pub.
SUNDAY: the group can decide on saturday night, but could be a day in resort or another tour.
This is a free, ‘come along and be prepared’ type event. Loch is an easy ski/ skin of about an hour from Loch carpark, so if we have a wide range of skills, we can break into a couple of groups once we get out there.
All backcountry people welcome – splitboarders/ AT/ etc.
